NGP Energy Capital Management
Kenneth A. Hersh, 51, is a Co-Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of NGP Energy Capital Management, a premier investment franchise in the natural resources industry. Founded in 1988, NGP has managed $13 billion of cumulative committed capital through its investment funds and affiliates which include: Natural Gas Partners, NGP Capital Resources Company (Nasdaq: “NGPC”), NGP Energy Technology Partners and NGP Global Agribusiness Partners. Mr. Hersh is responsible for directing the strategic and investment activities of the firm.
Under his leadership, NGP has made over 260 investments in natural resources companies located throughout North America. In addition, the firm has been the catalyst for some of the larger recapitalizations and merger transactions in the sector. NGP has been a leader in structuring and negotiating transactions with a total deal value of more than $40 billion. Under his stewardship, Natural Gas Partners has achieved a 25-year gross IRR of 32% (net IRR of 22%), making it one of the nation’s top investment firms.
Mr. Hersh currently serves in a senior managerial capacity for The Carlyle Group and as a director of NGPC, Memorial Resources Development Corporation, Memorial Production Partners and numerous private companies. In addition, he currently serves on the Dean’s Council of the Harvard Kennedy School and on the Advisory Councils of The Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and The Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University. He is a frequent lecturer at industry functions covering topics relating to the energy, corporate finance and private equity sectors and has been a frequent contributor on CNBC and Fox.
Mr. Hersh is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the World Economic Forum where he has been a featured speaker at its annual meeting held in Davos, Switzerland. In June of 2014, Mr. Hersh was recognized as Master Entrepreneur of the Year for the Southwest Region by Ernst & Young as a part of its Entrepreneur of the Year program.
Mr. Hersh has also been very involved in the nonprofit arena both nationally and locally. In 2010, he founded the Global Adaptation Institute which today has become the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Index (ND-GAIN) where he serves as a member of its Advisory Board. In addition, Mr. Hersh serves on the Board of the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues. Locally, Mr. Hersh serves on the Board of Trustees of the Communities Foundation of Texas, St. Mark’s School of Texas, the Board of Directors of the Baylor Health Care System Foundation and the Dallas Wildcat Committee. He is also a member of the Dallas Citizens Council.
Prior to co-founding NGP, Mr. Hersh was employed by the investment banking division of Morgan Stanley & Co. where he was a member of the firm’s energy group specializing in oil and gas financing and merger and acquisition transactions.
Mr. Hersh was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Princeton University where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Politics in 1985. In 1989, Mr. Hersh earned his M.B.A. degree from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business where he graduated as an Arjay Miller Scholar.
